Ingredient 3 of 5

Bacopa Monnieri in SonoVive: What the Memory Studies Show

Quick answer

Bacopa monnieri is an Ayurvedic herb named as one of five SonoVive ingredients. In trials, 300-450 mg a day for 12 weeks improved some memory recall tests (Pase 2012 bacopa review). It has never been tested for hearing. The vendor publishes no amount; sponsored articles report 120 mg per capsule, which we could not confirm.

The basics

What is Bacopa monnieri?

Bacopa monnieri is a small herb from the Ayurvedic tradition. In modern research it is tested as a memory aid, mostly in healthy adults.

SonoVive names it third of its five ingredients, after ginkgo and St. John's wort. The brand never says why bacopa is in a hearing formula. The bottle's second claim, Supports Brain Function, is the most likely reason. No study links bacopa to the ear, to ringing or to hearing in noise.

Most of the label column below says "not published". That gap is the main thing to understand before you buy.

Dose check

How much bacopa is in SonoVive?

The vendor does not say. Two sponsored articles report 120 mg per capsule.

Reported per capsule vs study doses, mg a day

Ginkgo, reported50 mg

Bacopa, reported120 mg

(GEM trial (DeKosky 2008))

(NIDCD age-related hearing loss)

Reported amounts come from sponsored articles and are not confirmed by the vendor; study doses are from the GEM trial (GEM trial (DeKosky 2008)) and bacopa trials (Pase 2012 bacopa review). Hearing figures are from NIDCD: about one in three people aged 65 to 74 and nearly half of those over 75 have hearing loss (NIDCD age-related hearing loss).

If the 120 mg figure is right, one capsule holds about 40% of the 300 mg dose most bacopa trials used (ADDF bacopa 2024). It holds about 27% of the 450 mg high end in the 12-week trials (Pase 2012 bacopa review). If the figure is wrong, nobody outside the company knows the real amount, because no Supplement Facts panel has been published.

Do not try to close the gap by taking extra capsules. The serving size is set by your bottle, and the other four ingredients would rise with it. Follow the directions printed on your bottle.

The research

Does bacopa improve memory?

Somewhat, in some tests. A 2012 review of 6 randomized trials found bacopa improved 9 of 17 tests of memory free recall at 300-450 mg a day over 12 weeks (Pase 2012 bacopa review). The same review found little evidence for other kinds of thinking.

A 2014 analysis pooled 9 studies with 518 people who took bacopa for at least 12 weeks. On the Trail B test, which times how fast you connect numbered and lettered dots, people were 17.9 milliseconds quicker (Kongkeaw 2014 bacopa meta-analysis). That points to slightly faster attention. That is a small lab-test gain, not a change most people would notice.

Ears, not memory

Does bacopa help tinnitus or hearing loss?

There is no evidence that it does. Every bacopa trial we found measured memory or attention, not hearing, ringing or how well people follow speech.

That matters for a reader like a 72-year-old retired bus driver who keeps asking his wife to repeat herself. Missing words at dinner can feel like a memory problem, yet it is often a hearing problem. A hearing test sorts that out. If it shows hearing loss, hearing aids are the proven help, and adults with mild to moderate loss can buy them over the counter (FDA OTC hearing aids).

For ringing, NIDCD lists sound therapy, hearing aids and counseling as the things that help, and says no supplement has been proven to work (NIDCD tinnitus). Bacopa is not on that list. For the bigger picture, read our hearing health guide.

Timing

How long does bacopa take to work?

In trials, about 12 weeks. The ADDF report says any benefit may take at least 3 months to show (ADDF bacopa 2024). That clashes with SonoVive's refund rules, which give you 60 days.

  1. Weeks 1-4

Too early for a memory effect in the trials. Stomach upset, if it happens, often shows up now.

  2. Weeks 5-8

Still short of the trial length. Day 60 ends the refund window, so a refund call has to happen in this stretch.

  3. Weeks 9-12

The point where trials started to measure recall gains, at doses well above the reported 120 mg.

Put plainly, by the time bacopa might do something, the money-back window has closed. Weigh that before you order a bigger pack. The SonoVive results timeline walks through each month.

Safety

What are the side effects of bacopa?

Stomach and gut trouble is the most common complaint. In one study, 11% of people quit because of it (ADDF bacopa 2024). Bacopa can also interact with some medicines and needs care with a few health conditions.

Gut

Upset stomach

Nausea, cramps and loose stools are the most reported effects in trials (ADDF bacopa 2024).

Medicines

Drug interactions

Anticholinergic drugs, cholinesterase inhibitors such as donepezil, and thyroid medicine may interact (ADDF bacopa 2024).

Conditions

Use care with

A slow heart rate, stomach ulcers or asthma. Herbal bacopa also carries a heavy-metal contamination risk (ADDF bacopa 2024).

Thyroid or dementia medicine?

Bring the bottle to your doctor or pharmacist before the first capsule. Bacopa may change how these drugs behave, and SonoVive publishes no warning panel online to guide you.

The full list for every ingredient is on the SonoVive side effects page.

The whole capsule

Is it a problem that SonoVive pairs bacopa with huperzine A?

Nobody has studied the pair, so the honest answer is that it is unknown. It is still worth asking about.

Huperzine A works the same way as dementia drugs: it slows the breakdown of acetylcholine, a brain messenger (ADDF huperzine A). The ADDF lists drugs of that type as a possible bacopa interaction (ADDF bacopa 2024). SonoVive puts both in one capsule. At the small amounts reported, the overlap may be minor. Without published amounts, no one can check.

What are SonoVive's other named ingredients?

St. John's wort carries the biggest medicine risk of the five. Ginkgo is the only one ever tested for tinnitus. Pick one below.

FAQ

Bacopa in SonoVive: common questions

How much bacopa is in SonoVive?

The vendor does not publish it. Two sponsored articles report 120 mg of bacopa leaf extract per capsule, but we could not confirm that with the seller. Most bacopa trials used about 300 mg a day, so the reported amount is well under half of a typical study dose.

Is bacopa good for tinnitus?

No study shows that it helps tinnitus. Bacopa trials measured memory and attention, never ringing in the ears. NIDCD says no supplement has been proven to help tinnitus and points to sound therapy, hearing aids and counseling instead. Bacopa's evidence is for memory recall only.

Does bacopa really improve memory?

Modestly, in some tests. A review of 6 trials found better scores on 9 of 17 memory recall tests after 12 weeks at 300-450 mg a day. A larger analysis of 9 studies found attention about 18 milliseconds faster. Other kinds of thinking showed little change.

How long does bacopa take to start working?

Trials ran about 12 weeks, and the ADDF says benefit may need at least 3 months. SonoVive's refund window is 60 days, so any memory effect from bacopa would likely come after the window closes. Plan your refund decision before day 60.

What are the side effects of Bacopa monnieri?

Stomach upset is the most common, including nausea, cramps and loose stools; 11% of people quit in one study. Use care with a slow heart rate, ulcers or asthma. Bacopa may interact with thyroid medicine, anticholinergic drugs and dementia medicines such as donepezil.

Can I take bacopa with thyroid medication?

Ask your doctor first. The ADDF lists thyroid medicine among the drugs bacopa may interact with. Bring the bottle and your full medicine list to your pharmacist before starting, since SonoVive also names St. John's wort.

Is the bacopa in SonoVive tested for heavy metals?

No lab report has been published. The ADDF notes a heavy-metal contamination risk with bacopa products. The seller lists lot and certificate codes, but these are reference codes, not lab proof, and no Certificate of Analysis is available to read.
