SonoVive Side Effects: What to Know Before You Start

Quick answer

SonoVive side effects come from what is known about its five named ingredients.

St. John's wort can weaken birth control, warfarin, some statins and antidepressants, and ginkgo and vinpocetine may add to bleeding risk. Stomach upset, dizziness and poor sleep are possible.

If you take any medications or are pregnant, ask your doctor first. See who it suits.

Ingredient by ingredient

What are the side effects of SonoVive?

Nobody has tested SonoVive itself for safety. What we know comes from studies of its named ingredients, taken one at a time.

The table lists what each source found. Doses in those studies were often far higher than the small amounts sponsored articles report for SonoVive, so your risk of a dose-related side effect may be lower. Interaction risk is different: even modest amounts of St. John's wort can matter.

Side effects reported for each named SonoVive ingredient in published sources (not in studies of SonoVive)
IngredientSide effects reportedMain interaction worry
St. John's wortDiarrhea, dizziness, trouble sleeping, restlessness, skin tingling; skin reactions to sun at large doses (NCCIH St. John's wort)Weakens many medicines; serotonin reactions
Ginkgo bilobaNo serious effects in tinnitus trials (Cochrane: Ginkgo for tinnitus 2022); may cause or prolong bleeding (MSKCC ginkgo)Blood thinners, NSAIDs, some seizure and HIV drugs
Bacopa monnieriStomach upset is the most common; 11% quit in one study (ADDF bacopa 2024)Thyroid and dementia medicines
VinpocetineFlushing, rash, stomach upset, low blood pressure (MSKCC vinpocetine)Blood thinners, blood-pressure drugs; pregnancy
Huperzine ANausea, loss of appetite, dizziness, headache, blurred vision (Yang 2013 huperzine meta-analysis) (ADDF huperzine A)Donepezil, rivastigmine

The top safety point

Can SonoVive interact with your medicines?

Yes, and St. John's wort is the reason. It speeds up how the body clears many drugs, so those drugs can stop working as well. NIH lists birth control pills, warfarin, cyclosporine, some statins and antidepressants such as amitriptyline and bupropion (NCCIH St. John's wort).

The risk runs the other way with serotonin drugs. Combined with them, St. John's wort may cause serious serotonin-related side effects.

Think of a 58-year-old woman on sertraline who hears a constant hiss at night. She sees an ad and wants to try SonoVive. The safe order is her prescriber first, then a decision. Stopping her antidepressant to make room for a supplement would be the wrong trade.

Birth control can fail

The pill may protect you less while St. John's wort is in your system (NCCIH St. John's wort). Vinpocetine, also in SonoVive, carries an FDA warning for anyone who could become pregnant (FDA vinpocetine). Together that is a clear reason to skip SonoVive if pregnancy is possible.

Blood thinners and surgery

Does SonoVive raise your bleeding risk?

It may, for people on blood thinners. NCCIH says ginkgo may increase bleeding risk with anticoagulants such as warfarin (NCCIH ginkgo). Vinpocetine may add to that effect (MSKCC vinpocetine). Two ingredients pulling in the same direction is worth a pharmacist's check.

01

On warfarin or another blood thinner

Ask your prescriber before any capsule. St. John's wort may weaken warfarin while ginkgo may add to bleeding.

02

Daily aspirin or NSAIDs

Ibuprofen, naproxen and low-dose aspirin all affect clotting. Mention SonoVive by name.

03

Surgery or dental work planned

Supplements can change bleeding and how you respond to anesthesia (ODS: What you need to know). Tell your surgeon and dentist.

Who should skip it

Who should not take SonoVive?

Some people should not take it at all, and others should ask first. The difference matters.

Do not take it

  • Pregnant, or could become pregnant (FDA vinpocetine warning) (FDA vinpocetine)
  • Breastfeeding
  • Under 18
  • Already on donepezil, rivastigmine or a similar dementia drug (ADDF huperzine A)

Ask your doctor first

  • Antidepressants, birth control, cyclosporine, statins, HIV medicine
  • Thyroid or blood-pressure medicine, insulin
  • Seizure disorder or seizure-threshold drugs (MSKCC ginkgo)
  • Slow heart rate, asthma or stomach ulcers (ADDF bacopa 2024)

The vendor's disclaimer also tells anyone pregnant, nursing, on medication or with a medical condition to consult a physician. More detail on who SonoVive may suit.

Is SonoVive safe for you to try?

Answer five questions. It sorts you into stop, ask first, or fine to consider.

1. Has your hearing dropped suddenly, in one or both ears, over hours or a few days?
2. Are you pregnant, could you become pregnant, or are you breastfeeding?
3. Do you take an antidepressant, birth control pills, a blood thinner, cyclosporine, a statin or HIV medicine?
4. Do you take a dementia medicine such as donepezil, or medicine for thyroid, blood pressure or seizures?
5. Have you had a hearing test in the past year?

If something feels wrong

What should you do if you get a side effect from SonoVive?

  1. Stop the capsules

Do not restart until you have spoken to a clinician.

  2. Call your doctor or pharmacist

Bring the bottle. Its label lists what is inside.

  3. Report it to FDA

Use MedWatch online or call 800-FDA-1088 (FDA MedWatch).

For chest pain, fainting, a severe rash, or high fever with confusion, call 911.

Your ears

Could new ear symptoms be a warning sign rather than a side effect?

Yes, and they need a doctor either way. NIDCD calls sudden hearing loss a medical emergency (NIDCD sudden deafness). FDA also sends people to a doctor, ideally an ear specialist, for ringing in one ear only, dizziness or spinning, ear pain, or fluid or blood from the ear (FDA OTC hearing aids).

Dizziness is listed for St. John's wort and huperzine A. So if you feel unsteady after starting SonoVive, stop and get checked. Do not assume it is the supplement, and do not assume it is not.

FAQ

SonoVive side effects FAQ

Does SonoVive have side effects?

It can. No study of SonoVive exists, but its named ingredients have known side effects: diarrhea, dizziness and poor sleep from St. John's wort, stomach upset from bacopa, nausea and blurred vision from huperzine A, and flushing from vinpocetine. Most are mild.

Can I take SonoVive with sertraline or other antidepressants?

Ask your prescriber first and expect a no. St. John's wort, a named ingredient, can cause serious serotonin side effects with antidepressants and can weaken some of them. Never stop an antidepressant to try a supplement.

Can I take SonoVive with warfarin or other blood thinners?

Talk to your prescriber before trying it. Two named ingredients, ginkgo and vinpocetine, may raise bleeding risk, while St. John's wort can weaken warfarin. That mix makes a blood thinner harder to control.

Does SonoVive make birth control less effective?

It may. St. John's wort can weaken birth control pills, and vinpocetine carries an FDA warning for anyone who could become pregnant. If pregnancy is possible, skip SonoVive.

Can SonoVive cause dizziness?

It is possible. Dizziness is a listed side effect of St. John's wort and of huperzine A. Dizziness can also be an inner-ear problem, so stop the capsules and see a doctor if you feel unsteady.

Should I stop SonoVive before surgery?

Tell your surgeon you take it and follow their timing. NIH notes that supplements can raise bleeding risk or change your response to anesthesia, and ginkgo and vinpocetine both affect bleeding.

Where do I report a reaction to SonoVive?

Report it to FDA MedWatch online or call 800-FDA-1088. Keep the bottle, note the date you started, and tell your doctor.
