Do Tinnitus Supplements Really Work? What the Research Shows

Quick answer

No tinnitus supplement has been proven to work. NIDCD says there is no cure and that vitamins, herbal extracts and supplements sold for it have not been shown effective. Ginkgo is the best-tested herb, and a 2022 Cochrane review of 12 studies called its benefit uncertain. Better support exists for sound therapy, hearing aids and counseling.

The short answer

Is there a supplement that works for tinnitus?

Not one with proof. The National Institutes of Health says so directly.

NIDCD writes that there is currently no cure for tinnitus, though there are ways to reduce symptoms. It adds that vitamins, herbal extracts and supplements are advertised as cures, and none has been proven effective.(NIDCD tinnitus)

That one paragraph answers most of the searches: "do tinnitus supplements work", "tinnitus supplements that work" and "what is the best tinnitus supplement." The honest reply is that the best-supported steps are not capsules. They are a medical check, a hearing test, sound therapy, hearing aids where hearing is low, and counseling.

Key facts

What are the key facts about tinnitus supplements?

  • No vitamin, herb or supplement has been proven effective for tinnitus, per NIDCD.
  • Ginkgo is the most tested herb. The 2022 Cochrane review covered 12 studies and 1,915 people, and called its benefit uncertain.
  • An earlier Cochrane review of 4 trials and 1,543 people did not show that ginkgo works when ringing is the main complaint.
  • Supplements cannot legally claim to treat a disease.
  • SonoVive names ginkgo among five ingredients. The bottle says Promotes Hearing Health and makes no tinnitus claim.
  • Ringing in one ear, a pulse-like beat, dizziness, ear pain or sudden loss needs a doctor.

The best-tested herb

What did the ginkgo studies find?

Cochrane has reviewed ginkgo for ringing twice. The newer review, from 2022, pooled 12 studies covering 1,915 people. Its authors said there was uncertainty about benefits and harms compared with placebo, and that ginkgo may make little or no difference to tinnitus severity.(Cochrane: Ginkgo for tinnitus 2022)

An older review, of 4 trials with 1,543 people, landed in much the same place.(Cochrane: Ginkgo for tinnitus (Hilton)) NCCIH says research does not support ginkgo for tinnitus,(NCCIH ginkgo) and Memorial Sloan Kettering calls the studies mixed.(MSKCC ginkgo)

"Uncertain" is not "proven useless." It is closer to "we cannot tell." For a buyer, that is a weak base for a purchase. The full story is in what the Cochrane reviews found.

Top lists

Why do "best" and "top rated" tinnitus supplement lists exist?

Because the topic is searched a lot and a click can pay. Many lists are sponsored, so a writer is paid when you buy. Some of what they say may be accurate. It does mean the list is a sales tool, not an independent test.

We run a retail site and are paid when you order through our links. That is why this page ranks nothing. We cannot name a "best" tinnitus supplement, because none has proof, and a ranking would imply one.

A list is worth reading only if it names the evidence for each pick, shows the amounts, mentions interactions and admits what it does not know.

What the rules allow

What may a supplement legally claim about tinnitus?

Not that it treats the problem. U.S. rules allow structure and function wording, such as "supports" or "promotes," with a note that the product is not meant to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.(21 CFR 101.93) A claim to treat tinnitus would be a disease claim.

Be wary of any page that promises the ringing will stop in days. The FTC says health claims generally need randomized human testing,(FTC health products guidance) and regulators have acted against memory supplements that claimed more than they could show.(FTC and FDA Alzheimer's warning letters 2019)

Where SonoVive stands

Does SonoVive claim to treat tinnitus?

The bottle does not. Its two claims are Promotes Hearing Health and Supports Brain Function. The sales page talks about supporting the health of your ears. Many sponsored articles go further and sell it for ringing, and those are the writers' words.

Of its five named ingredients, only ginkgo has been tested for tinnitus. Bacopa and huperzine A were studied for memory, St. John's wort for mood and vinpocetine for dementia. No study of the capsule exists, and the vendor does not publish the amounts.

If you take daily medicines, note that St. John's wort can weaken many of them.(NCCIH St. John's wort) See the SonoVive tinnitus guide for the longer plan.

Before anything

What should you do about ringing before buying anything?

See your primary care doctor. NIDCD suggests starting there, because wax, infection and some medicines can play a part.(NIDCD tinnitus) Then book a hearing test.

Go sooner for ringing in one ear only, ringing that beats in time with your pulse, spinning dizziness, ear pain, or fluid or blood from the ear.(FDA OTC hearing aids) Go the same day if hearing drops over hours or days. NIDCD calls that a medical emergency.(NIDCD sudden deafness)

At home

What can ease ringing at home while you wait?

  • Keep soft sound on, such as a fan or a quiet radio. Silence makes ringing seem louder.
  • Wear earplugs around mowers, power tools and concerts.
  • Rate the ringing from 0 to 10 once a week and bring the notes to your visit.
  • Ask your doctor about counseling, which changes how much the sound bothers you.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do tinnitus supplements really work?

No supplement has been proven to. NIDCD says vitamins, herbal extracts and supplements sold for tinnitus have not been shown effective. Sound therapy, hearing aids and counseling are better supported.

What is the best supplement for tinnitus?

We cannot name one, because none has proof. Ginkgo is the best-tested herb, and a 2022 Cochrane review of 12 studies found its benefit uncertain. Start with a doctor and a hearing test.

Does ginkgo help ringing in the ears?

Probably not much. Cochrane reviewers said it may make little or no difference to how severe tinnitus feels, and NCCIH says research does not support it. Ginkgo can also raise bleeding risk with blood thinners.

Does SonoVive help tinnitus?

Nothing in the research shows that it does. The bottle claims only to promote hearing health. Of its five named ingredients, only ginkgo has been tested for ringing, with an uncertain result.

Is there a tinnitus supplement study I can trust?

Look for randomized trials in people with tinnitus, with a placebo group and published results. For ginkgo, the Cochrane reviews are the strongest summaries. No such trial of SonoVive has been published.

When is ringing in the ears an emergency?

When hearing drops over hours or days. Get medical care that day. Ringing in one ear only, a pulse-like sound, vertigo, ear pain or fluid from the ear also need a visit soon.

Our verdict

Our view

The evidence does not support the promise in most tinnitus supplement ads. We think a direct sentence helps more than a hopeful one: no capsule has been shown to quiet ringing, and there are steps that have support.

If you try a supplement anyway, do it after a medical check, with a pharmacist's okay and a decision date. We earn money when you order SonoVive through our links, so weigh that, and bring medical questions to your doctor.
