Tinnitus: What Actually Helps, and Where a Supplement Like SonoVive Fits
NIDCD says tinnitus cannot yet be cured, but four things make it easier to live with: a medical and hearing check, sound therapy, hearing aids when hearing is low, and counseling such as CBT. No vitamin or herbal product, SonoVive included, has been shown to work (NIDCD tinnitus). A supplement can come after that care, never before it.

The basics
What is tinnitus, and why does it happen?
Tinnitus is a sound only you can hear: ringing, hissing, buzzing or a high whine. It is a symptom, not a disease of its own. Most often it travels with hearing loss from noise or age. Earwax and some medicines can also play a part (NIDCD tinnitus).
So the first question is not "which pill?" It is "what is my hearing doing?" A 67-year-old retired machinist with a steady ring after decades on loud floors likely has noise damage under it. Handle the hearing side and the ringing often bothers him less.
Safety first
When is ringing in the ears a reason to see a doctor fast?
If hearing fades in one or both ears over hours or a few days, go the same day. NIDCD says care delayed more than two to four weeks is less likely to help (NIDCD sudden deafness).
- Ringing or hearing loss in one ear only (FDA OTC hearing aids)
- A pulsing sound that keeps time with your heartbeat
- Spinning dizziness (vertigo), ear pain, or fluid or blood from the ear (FDA OTC hearing aids)
- A clear change in your hearing within the past 6 months (FDA OTC hearing aids)
Why speed matters: sudden hearing loss is an emergency.
What helps
What actually helps tinnitus?
These are the helps NIDCD names. None makes the sound vanish, but each can make it fade into the background.
A medical and hearing check
NIDCD's first step is your primary care doctor, who checks for wax, infection and medicine side effects, then a hearing test (NIDCD tinnitus).
Hearing aids
Aids bring outside sound back up, so the inner noise stands out less. Adults with perceived mild to moderate loss can buy them over the counter (FDA OTC hearing aids).
Sound therapy
A fan, a bedside sound machine or a wearable device gives the brain something else to listen to, especially at night.
Counseling, such as CBT
CBT does not change the sound. It changes how much the sound grabs you, which drives poor sleep and worry (NIDCD tinnitus).

Evidence, ranked
Do supplements like SonoVive help tinnitus?
Not on current evidence. Of SonoVive's five named ingredients, only ginkgo has been tested on ringing.
- Hearing aidsThe proven help for age-related loss
Hearing aids, including over-the-counter aids for adults with mild to moderate loss, are the standard treatment. (FDA OTC hearing aids)
- BacopaMemory trials, 12 weeks
Some gains in memory recall at 300-450 mg a day. Never tested for hearing. (Pase 2012 bacopa review)
- Huperzine A20 Alzheimer's trials
Some score gains, but poor study quality. Never tested for hearing. (Yang 2013 huperzine meta-analysis)
- GinkgoCochrane 2022: 12 tinnitus studies
Uncertain benefit; it may make little or no difference to how bad ringing feels. (Cochrane: Ginkgo for tinnitus 2022)
- VinpocetineCochrane: 3 dementia studies
Inconclusive, and FDA warns against it in pregnancy. (Cochrane vinpocetine)
- SonoViveNo study of the product
No trial of SonoVive for hearing, ringing or memory has been published. (FTC health products guidance)

Where does SonoVive fit in a tinnitus plan?
At the end of the line, if at all. The brand names ginkgo biloba, St. John's wort, bacopa, vinpocetine and huperzine A, but it does not publish how much of each a capsule holds.
A 2022 Cochrane review of ginkgo, 12 studies with 1,915 people, could not show a clear benefit (Cochrane: Ginkgo for tinnitus 2022). The other four were studied for mood or memory. More: what Cochrane found.
If your check is done, your hearing is handled and you still want to try a supplement, that is your call. Nobody has measured what SonoVive does to ringing, so set a date to judge it.
Before you try one
Is SonoVive safe to take for ringing in the ears?
It depends on your medicines. The main concern is St. John's wort, reportedly the largest ingredient. It can weaken birth control pills, warfarin, cyclosporine, some statins and antidepressants such as amitriptyline and bupropion (NCCIH St. John's wort).
Think of a 58-year-old on an antidepressant who hopes a capsule will quiet her ears. With a serotonin drug, St. John's wort can cause serious side effects, so her prescriber hears about it first.
Ginkgo and vinpocetine may add to bleeding risk (NCCIH ginkgo) (MSKCC vinpocetine). Full list: SonoVive side effects page.
Everyday steps
What can you do at home to make ringing less bothersome?
Never sit in silence
Keep a fan or soft radio on. Quiet makes the ringing the loudest thing in the room.
Protect what you have
Wear earplugs for mowing, power tools and concerts. More noise damage can mean more ringing.
Keep a simple log
Once a week, rate the ringing from 0 to 10. Bring the notes to your hearing visit.

- Tinnitus. National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIH), current."Currently, there is no cure for tinnitus, but there are ways to reduce symptoms." Vitamins, herbal extracts and supplements are advertised as cures but none has been proven effective. First see your primary care doctor; sound therapy, hearing aids and counseling help.
- Sudden Deafness. National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIH), current.Consider sudden deafness "a medical emergency and visit a doctor immediately." "Treatment that is delayed for more than two to four weeks is less likely to reverse or reduce permanent hearing loss."
- OTC Hearing Aids: What You Should Know. U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2023.OTC hearing aids are for people 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. See a doctor (preferably an ENT) for hearing change in the past 6 months, vertigo, ear fluid or blood, ear pain, or hearing loss or ringing in only one ear.
- Ginkgo biloba for tinnitus (CD013514). Sereda M, Xia J, Scutt P, Hilton MP, El Refaie A, Hoare DJ; Cochrane, 2022.12 studies, 1,915 participants. "There is uncertainty about the benefits and harms of Ginkgo biloba for the treatment of tinnitus when compared to placebo"; may have little to no effect on tinnitus severity; no serious adverse effects reported.
- St. John's Wort. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NIH), current. Can weaken many medicines, including warfarin, birth control pills, cyclosporine, some statins and antidepressants such as amitriptyline and bupropion; with serotonin-affecting drugs it may cause serious serotonin-related side effects. Side effects: diarrhea, dizziness, trouble sleeping, restlessness, skin tingling; severe skin reactions after sun exposure at large doses.
FAQ
Tinnitus questions people search
Can tinnitus go away on its own?
Sometimes. Ringing after a loud concert often fades within a day or two. Ringing that lasts for weeks is less likely to clear by itself, so NIDCD suggests seeing your primary care doctor to look for a treatable cause.
What is the best treatment for ringing in the ears?
No single treatment fixes it, according to NIDCD. The best-supported helps are a medical and hearing check, hearing aids when hearing is low, sound therapy and counseling such as CBT.
Does SonoVive help tinnitus?
No study shows that it does. SonoVive has never been tested in a published trial, and NIDCD says no supplement has been proven to help tinnitus. Its best-known ingredient, ginkgo, showed uncertain benefit for ringing in a 2022 Cochrane review of 12 studies.
Is tinnitus a sign of hearing loss?
Often, yes. NIDCD says ringing frequently comes with hearing loss, so a hearing test is a sensible first step. Earwax and some medicines can also cause it.
Can I take SonoVive with my antidepressant?
Ask your prescriber first. SonoVive names St. John's wort, which can weaken some antidepressants and, with drugs that affect serotonin, may cause serious side effects.
When should I worry about ringing in my ears?
See a doctor soon if ringing is in one ear only, pulses with your heartbeat, or comes with dizziness, ear pain or fluid. Go the same day if hearing drops suddenly: NIDCD calls that a medical emergency.
